Irish patients cautioned on side effects of Ramipril and amlodipine

Dr Amir Khan appeared on ITV's Lorraine to warn Irish patients that the two most commonly prescribed blood‑pressure drugs, Ramipril and amlodipine, can cause troublesome side effects. He explained that Ramipril may trigger a persistent dry cough by releasing bradykinin, while amlodipine can lead to fluid leakage into the ankles, causing swelling, and may affect the gums.

Khan emphasized that many alternatives exist and urged anyone experiencing these symptoms to consult their GP or pharmacist. The Health Service Executive confirmed that a dry cough is a recognised side effect of Ramipril and that patients often receive ineffective antibiotics and chest X‑rays before the cause is identified. Viewers shared personal experiences, including switches to other medications such as losartan.
