Irish primary teacher workload claims face fact-check
A claim made by the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) regarding teacher workloads is undergoing fact-checking. John Boyle, the INTO general secretary, asserted that Irish primary teachers perform the most pupil contact hours in the world, specifically citing 910 hours.
Analysts note that such comparisons are complex due to varying definitions of “working hours.” Discrepancies often arise between classroom contact time and total working time, which includes lesson preparation, assessment, administrative tasks, and meetings. Furthermore, international comparisons via the OECD are subject to differences in school calendars, contractual arrangements, and how various countries report data.
The debate comes amid industrial action by teachers, as workload remains a central issue in discussions regarding education funding, staffing pressures, and public-sector recruitment and retention in Ireland.
