Ireland public sector strikes escalate over pay dispute

Public sector industrial action in Ireland is escalating as unions move from work-to-rule measures toward full strikes over a new national pay agreement. The dispute follows the expiration of the previous Public Service Agreement on June 30, 2024.

Teachers' unions, including the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) and the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI), are expected to cause school closures on October 14 and October 21. SIPTU members in the health service have also announced a 24-hour strike for October 14, following a period of work-to-rule action that involved over 11,000 members across 30 hospitals.

Union leaders argue that negotiations must address current economic pressures and the cost of living. In response, Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee has urged against strikes, stating they ‘won’t benefit anybody’ and emphasizing that the government is willing to engage in talks without preconditions. The government maintains that funds are being reserved for public sector pay, but insists on a formal negotiation process.
