Irkutsk laboratory worker dies of suspected plague in Siberia

A laboratory worker in Russia’s Irkutsk region has died following a suspected exposure to pneumonic plague, sparking significant public concern and emergency health measures in Siberia.

Daria Shipilova, a 28-year-old technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, died on October 2 after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Local reports and independent media suggest the infection may have resulted from a laboratory accident on September 25, in which Shipilova allegedly broke a test tube containing live Yersinia pestis bacteria.

In response, authorities have placed approximately 200 individuals under medical observation and implemented quarantine measures at several hospitals in the Shelekhov and Irkutsk areas. While regional officials, including Governor Igor Kobzev, have described the situation as a “particularly dangerous infection,” the Russian consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has officially denied a plague outbreak. The agency stated that the deceased was diagnosed with “pneumonia of unknown etiology” and that testing found no microorganisms linked to her professional activities.

The United States is monitoring the situation closely, with State Department officials coordinating with the CDC to evaluate the reports. Local measures include mandatory mask-wearing at some industrial sites and increased sanitary surveillance in the region.
