Irkutsk region investigates suspected plague death and 189 contacts

A suspected case of pneumonic plague has emerged in Russia's Irkutsk region, resulting in the death of a 27-year-old woman. The deceased was an employee of a specialized institute dedicated to combating the plague.

Following her death, 189 individuals who had contact with the patient have been placed under medical surveillance. Of these, 114 are hospitalized, 63 are under observation in another facility, and 12 are being monitored at a specialized research institute. While some individuals under surveillance have reported symptoms, official confirmation of infection has not yet been issued.

The Shelevo District Hospital, where the woman was treated, has suspended new admissions and undergone disinfection procedures. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev has convened an emergency meeting of the sanitary-epidemic commission to address the situation.

Authorities are investigating two primary hypotheses regarding the source of infection: whether the woman contracted the disease during a professional trip to Buryatia, where natural plague outbreaks have been reported near the Mongolian border, or if she accidentally broke a test tube containing biological material in a laboratory setting.
