Iron deficiency awareness campaigns launch in Australia and Scotland

During Iron Awareness Week, from October 12 to 18, health initiatives in Australia and Scotland are addressing widespread iron deficiency through nutritional education.

In Australia, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) reports that one in three young women lack sufficient iron stores and consume only half of their recommended daily intake. To combat this, MLA is partnering with the healthcare platform Ausdoc to provide educational resources to general practitioners and is utilizing social media and clinic screens to promote iron-rich foods, such as lean red meat, which contains highly absorbable haem iron.

In Scotland, Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) has identified a knowledge gap regarding iron levels, noting that over half of Scottish adults have experienced or suspect they have experienced low iron. Research indicates that while many recognize iron's role in reducing fatigue, fewer understand its impact on immune and mental functions. To raise awareness, QMS has partnered with the all-female rowing crew Saltire Tides, who are preparing for an unsupported Atlantic crossing in 2026.
