Iron deficiency identified as potential cause of hair loss
Iron deficiency is a common cause of hair loss, as hair follicles are highly sensitive to low iron levels. While losing up to 100 hairs a day is considered normal, increased shedding can signal underlying health issues.
According to family physician Simona Dikšienė from the Antėja health solutions center, iron is essential for hemoglobin synthesis, which transports oxygen throughout the body. When iron stores in the liver and bone marrow are depleted, hair follicles may lack sufficient oxygen, leading to increased brittleness and hair loss. This can occur even if hemoglobin levels in a standard blood test appear normal.
To accurately assess iron stores, a ferritin test is recommended, as it reflects true body reserves. However, medical professionals note that inflammation or active infections can artificially inflate ferritin levels, potentially masking a deficiency.
