Iron Maiden celebrates 20th anniversary of ‘A Matter of Life and Death’

Iron Maiden’s fourteenth studio album, ‘A Matter of Life and Death’, marks its 20th anniversary. Released in August 2006, the record is noted for its complex, dark, and atmospheric approach to heavy metal.

Produced with Kevin Shirley, the album was recorded with a raw, live-in-studio sound at the request of bassist Steve Harris. The songwriting explores heavy themes including religion, existentialism, and the negative impacts of war, such as the creation of the atomic bomb in ‘Brighter Than a Thousand Suns’.

The album arrived during a period of renewed energy for the band following the returns of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith. While the subsequent tour was the only one in the 2000s that did not visit Brazil, the record remains a significant part of the band’s discography for its progressive structures and epic compositions.
