Ironman World Championship: Patrick Lange withdraws from final Hawaii race

The Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, saw significant drama as three-time champion Patrick Lange was forced to withdraw during his final appearance on the island. After a strong swim, Lange suffered severe muscle cramps during the cycling portion, specifically affecting his lower back and posterior leg muscles. He eventually abandoned the race at the Hawi turnaround point, describing it as one of the “hardest DNFs” of his life.

In the men's race, Frenchman Vincent Luis secured his first long-distance World Championship title with a time of 7:47:27, followed by Gustav Iden and Matthew Marquardt.

In the women's competition, German athlete Laura Philipp completed her medal set by securing second place. Her performance earned her $65,000 for the podium finish and $200,000 for winning the Ironman Pro Series overall. The event was marked by challenging environmental conditions, including heavy rain, wind, and high humidity.
