Irpinia and Sannio face business depopulation risk

An analysis by the Centro Studi Aree Interne di Unimpresa Irpinia Sannio highlights a silent economic phenomenon in the Italian provinces of Avellino and Benevento: the depopulation of businesses.

While demographic decline is visible through aging populations and empty schools, the report notes a simultaneous thinning of the economic infrastructure. This includes a reduction in shops, artisan workshops, laboratories, micro-enterprises, and essential services that have historically supported the Irpinia and Sannio regions.

As of late 2025, the provinces hold a total of 75,537 registered businesses, with 42,040 in Avellino and 33,497 in Benevento. Despite the overall number appearing substantial, the study warns that the economic structure is undergoing profound changes due to issues such as generational turnover and weakening local demand.
