IRS and Indian Tax Departments Speed Up Refund Processing

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service continues to promote direct‑deposit refunds as the fastest method, typically issuing most electronically filed refunds within 21 days after a return is accepted. Taxpayers can track status via the “Where’s My Refund?” online tool or the IRS2Go app, and delays may occur if bank details are incorrect or if returns claim credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which are subject to statutory hold periods.

India’s Income Tax Department reports that automation and quicker data verification at its Centralized Processing Center have reduced refund times for many salaried taxpayers, with some receiving refunds in 7–10 business days after e‑verification. Refunds are credited to bank accounts within four to five weeks on average, but discrepancies in AIS, TDS, Form 26AS or other records can trigger additional scrutiny and delay the payout. Taxpayers are advised to ensure accurate bank details and complete e‑verification to avoid delays.
