IRS extends tax relief for US ranchers facing drought

The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended tax relief for livestock producers affected by drought conditions. The measure applies to producers across 49 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, following reports from the US Drought Monitor indicating that nearly 40% of the continental United States has experienced extreme drought.

The extension allows ranchers more time to replace livestock sold or exchanged due to drought conditions and permits the deferral of taxes on gains from those transactions. While the standard replacement period is typically two years, the IRS is authorized to extend this to four years if drought conditions persist. To qualify, producers must demonstrate that the drought necessitated the sale or exchange of livestock intended for meat, milk, or breeding production.

Eligible producers whose replacement deadlines were set for the end of 2026 will now have until the end of their next fiscal year to replace the affected livestock.
