IRS guidelines for potential wedding-related tax deductions
While standard wedding expenses are generally not tax-deductible because they are payments for services, certain circumstances may allow for deductions under IRS rules.
For example, if a ceremony fee includes a donation to a religious institution that exceeds the fair market value of the services received, the excess amount may be deductible as a charitable contribution. Similarly, if a wedding is held at a nonprofit venue, such as a museum or state park, any payment made above the fair market value of the rental may qualify as a donation.
Additionally, wedding flowers may become deductible if they are donated to a nonprofit organization, such as a homeless shelter, after the event. In such cases, the deduction is limited to the fair market value of the flowers at the time of donation, rather than the original purchase price which includes labor and design costs.
