IRS launches volunteer recruitment for tax assistance programs

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially opened registration for volunteers and partner organizations to assist taxpayers with free tax preparation for the upcoming season. The initiative includes the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.

These programs primarily target low-income families, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and military veterans. During the previous season, volunteers prepared more than 2.5 million tax returns nationwide at no cost to taxpayers. Due to projected increases in demand, the agency is seeking to expand its network of collaborators.

Volunteers do not need to be accountants or lawyers to participate. The IRS provides free online training covering basic federal and state tax courses. Upon completing the training and passing an exam, participants receive official certification. Available roles range from tax preparers at community centers to administrative support, translation services, and site supervision.
