IRS to Publish Wait‑Time Metrics After Senate Advances Taxpayer Assistance Bill

The Senate Finance Committee approved the Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act in a 26‑1 vote. The bipartisan legislation would require the Internal Revenue Service to post a public dashboard showing call volume, backlogs, wait times and callback availability, and to offer a callback option on all phone lines by 2028. Senators Mike Crapo (R‑Idaho), Ron Wyden (D‑Oregon) and Mark Warner (D‑Virginia) said the bill modernizes IRS operations and strengthens taxpayer rights.

An amendment added by Senators James Lankford (R‑Oklahoma) and Raphael Warnock (D‑Georgia) extends due‑process protections to nonprofit organizations, mandating notice of the right to appeal IRS determinations of tax‑exempt status. Independent Sector and the National Council of Nonprofits praised the amendment as essential for preserving nonprofit independence and accountability.
