IRS union sues to block Trump tax immunity and $1.8B slush fund
The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), which represents career IRS employees, has joined a lawsuit in the Eastern District of Virginia to stop a tax carve‑out that would grant President Donald Trump and his family immunity from IRS audits. The complaint, filed on behalf of the union by Democracy Forward and its president Skye Perryman, calls the provision unlawful and unconstitutional. The suit also seeks to block the $1.776 billion “Anti‑Weaponization Fund” created to compensate Trump supporters who claim they were victims of political prosecutions. A federal judge, Leonie M. Brinkema, previously barred the fund in June, finding that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s statements that the fund was dead were misleading. The plaintiffs argue the tax protection violates federal law that prohibits the president from exempting himself from review.
