IRU and T&E urge EU summit on zero-emission heavy vehicles
The international road transport organization IRU and the environmental group Transport & Environment (T&E) have issued a joint appeal to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. They are calling for a strategic high-level dialogue to accelerate the decarbonization of the heavy-duty vehicle sector, including trucks, buses, and coaches.
The organizations argue that a transition to zero-emission vehicles is urgent due to rising diesel prices and energy security concerns driven by geopolitical conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. They also highlight that extreme weather events caused by climate change are increasingly disrupting transport operations and infrastructure.
To facilitate this transition, the groups propose a summit involving transport operators, vehicle manufacturers, energy providers, and infrastructure developers. The goal is to identify and resolve the practical and economic barriers—such as insufficient charging and hydrogen infrastructure—that currently hinder the widespread deployment of zero-emission heavy transport.
