Irvine nanny charged with 10 felony counts of child abuse
Iara Dossantos Bomfim, a 29-year-old nanny, has been charged with 10 felony counts of child abuse and endangerment following allegations of repeated physical attacks on a two-month-old infant in Irvine, California.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, nanny cam footage captured Bomfim punching, hitting, and violently shaking the baby between June 17 and July 11. The footage reportedly showed the defendant bouncing the infant on a yoga ball, striking the baby's head with a closed fist, and throwing the child onto a bed. In one instance, the baby allegedly fell headfirst off a bed, and medical aid was not sought.
Bomfim reportedly fled to Brazil on July 12, one day after the infant's mother discovered the abuse on the nursery camera. She was arrested by Irvine Police on October 23 upon her return to the United States while attempting to set up a new account for nanny services.
Bomfim has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $500,000 bail. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 18 years in state prison. Her next court appearance is scheduled for November 4 at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.
