Isaac Herzog calls Donald Trump Israel’s number one friend
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has described Donald Trump as Israel’s ‘number one friend,’ an attempt to downplay recent tensions between the two nations regarding conflicts in the Middle East and Iran.
Speaking to the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, Herzog emphasized that while Israel maintains many friendships, he believes Trump is the foremost. This sentiment aligns with recent statements from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told the UN General Assembly that Israel has no better partner than Trump.
Despite these public displays of friendship, signs of friction remain. These include past comments from Trump calling Netanyahu ‘crazy’ and remarks from Vice President JD Vance suggesting that Washington’s foreign policy should not be ‘subservient to the state of Israel.’ Additionally, the Trump administration has shown restraint regarding British sanctions on Israeli settlements, a move criticized by Herzog.
