Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz joins Canelo Team amid dispute with father
WBC super lightweight interim champion Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz has officially confirmed that his father is no longer part of his professional boxing team. The decision follows a public dispute regarding financial compensation and professional autonomy.
During a press event, Cruz stated that his move to join the Canelo Team, led by Eddy Reynoso, is driven by professional growth objectives. While acknowledging his father’s 17-year contribution to his career, Cruz emphasized that family ties should not dictate his personal, sporting, or economic decisions. He asserted that his independence is not subject to negotiation or external pressure.
The conflict arose after Cruz’s father, Isaac Cruz García, requested assistance from WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, seeking 10 percent of the boxer’s future earnings and compensation for his previous role. Previously, the father reportedly received 30 percent of the fighter's purses. Cruz maintains that while he remains grateful for his upbringing and training, he must maintain autonomy over his career trajectory.
