Isaías Fretes appointed Paraguay Health Minister amid medical strike threats
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña has appointed Dr. Isaías Fretes as the new Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare, replacing María Teresa Barán. Additionally, Dr. Derlis León, formerly the Health Manager of the Social Security Institute (IPS), has been named the new head of IPS.
Minister Fretes faces immediate challenges regarding a planned national medical strike scheduled for September 21 and 22. The National Medical Union (SINAMED) is demanding salary adjustments for all doctors and insists on a written agreement before suspending the strike. While Fretes expressed intent to resolve these disputes within the week, SINAMED leaders maintain that a formal document is necessary to halt the industrial action.
Alongside these leadership changes, the government announced a significant economic boost for the health sector. A historic investment of USD 760 million is planned for medicines and supplies by 2027, representing a nearly 200% increase compared to 2023. The National Cancer Institute (INCAN) is also set to receive approximately USD 195 million.
