Isabel Díaz Ayuso faces scrutiny over Chamberí penthouse purchase

Madrid regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso is facing intense political scrutiny regarding the purchase of a €6.3 million penthouse in Chamberí by the public entity Planifica Madrid. While the regional government initially stated the property was intended for official use during renovations at Puerta del Sol, critics, including Transport Minister Óscar Puente, have labeled the transaction as lacking transparency and potentially improper use of public funds.

Ayuso has addressed the controversy by stating she does not need an official residence and will not seek one in the ten months remaining before the regional elections. She has largely avoided providing new details on the property, maintaining that all necessary explanations have been given.

In response to the criticism, Ayuso has shifted her political focus toward the central government. She has heavily criticized Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, questioning the cost of his vacations in Lanzarote while the city of Ceuta faces a migration crisis and security challenges. Ayuso characterized the situation in Ceuta as an ‘invasion tolerated by the Government’ and accused the central administration of legislative paralysis and lack of accountability.
