Isabel Schnabel to leave ECB for senior IMF role in January 2027

Isabel Schnabel, a prominent member of the European Central Bank (ECB) Executive Board, has announced her resignation from the institution. She is scheduled to depart on January 3, 2027, nearly eleven months before her term was originally set to expire in December 2027.

Schnabel will transition to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where she is set to assume the roles of Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department on January 4, 2027. She succeeds Tobias Adrian in this capacity. To avoid conflicts of interest, the ECB has stated that Schnabel will not participate in any matters related to the IMF during her remaining time at the central bank.

Her departure contributes to a period of anticipated leadership changes at the ECB. Chief Economist Philip Lane is scheduled to depart in May 2027, and ECB President Christine Lagarde’s term is set to end in October 2027. The European Council will be responsible for appointing Schnabel’s successor.
