Isabell Werth criticizes toxic social media culture

Olympic equestrian champion Isabell Werth has criticized the current culture of online discussion, describing the social media landscape as a "sick world." Speaking ahead of the World Championships in Aachen, the 57-year-old athlete expressed that even using the word "quality" in relation to horses can trigger aggressive reactions online.

Werth stated that approximately 80 to 90 percent of her colleagues feel similar pressure, noting the presence of "stalkers" intent on creating a negative image of the sport. She also called for the regulation of social media, citing the harm caused by bullying and aggression, particularly among young people.

Addressing debates regarding animal welfare in equestrian sports, Werth noted that the social position of horses has changed positively, stating that horses are better cared for today than in the past, though she cautioned against prioritizing animals over humans.
