Isala medical drone pilot extended after 800 successful flights

A medical drone pilot program operating between Isala Meppel and Isala Zwolle in the Netherlands has been extended until mid-2027 following more than 800 successful flights. Since its launch in September 2025, the project has utilized a 22-kilometer route to transport medication, refrigerated drugs, and blood samples.

Research conducted during the pilot indicates that drone transport does not significantly impact the quality of the medications or blood samples being moved. The drones, operated by ANWB, achieved an operational availability of 92 to 95 percent, with average flight times of 14 minutes.

A key technical achievement of the program is the successful execution of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights. These operations demonstrated that medical drones can safely integrate into busy Dutch airspace shared with police and trauma helicopters. The collaboration involves the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, ANWB, Isala, KPN, and Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland (LVNL). The data gathered will serve as a foundation for developing a future national medical drone network and additional drone corridors.
