Isam B defends stance following niqab controversy

Danish musician Isam B is facing significant backlash following comments made in a podcast, where he described wearing a niqab as ‘something of the most feminist’ a woman can do. The remarks have sparked a political debate in Denmark.

Thomas Skriver Jensen, the integration and immigration spokesperson for the Social Democrats, has called for Isam B to be removed from the ‘Højskolesangbogen’ (the Danish Folk High School Songbook), arguing that the musician's views are incompatible with Western ideals of freedom. Isam B defended his inclusion in the songbook, stating his song ‘Ramadan i København’ represents a diverse Denmark and should not be a political battlefield.

In addition to the political scrutiny, a planned concert at Kulturcafé Ludvig in Sorø was canceled due to the controversy. Isam B expressed confusion regarding the cancellation, noting that the venue initially stated they focus on music rather than the political or religious views of performers before ultimately citing his views as the reason for the cancellation. He maintained his stance, stating, ‘I am Danish. I am Muslim. I am an artist. And I am staying.’
