Ischia residents protest rising cost of living
Hundreds of protesters, including students and fishermen, marched through the historic center of Ischia to demonstrate against the rising cost of living and inflation. The protest, which moved from the local branch of the Naples Court to Piazza Antica Reggia, highlighted the economic strain on island families.
Participants emphasized that the situation is particularly severe for island residents due to the prevalence of seasonal work, which often limits income to only five or six months per year. While food prices and general inflation have impacted mainland Italy, islanders face additional challenges with costs often exceeding those on the mainland.
The demonstration included speeches from Ischia Mayor Enzo Ferrandino and various student groups. Despite some chants directed at the government, the march remained orderly and was monitored by local law enforcement.
