Iserlohn hotel ammonia leak sends five to hospital

A defective refrigerator in a hotel in Iserlohn, North Rhine‑Westphalia released ammonia, triggering an emergency response on 5 August 2026. Firefighters and police entered the building in chemical‑protective suits after elevated ammonia levels were measured.

Eight people received on‑site medical care; five were transported to hospitals for further treatment. The refrigerator was removed, the area was ventilated and the building was secured. Authorities warned that ammonia is a highly toxic gas that can irritate eyes and respiratory passages.
