Iserlohn issues warning over toxic algae in Seilersee
The city of Iserlohn has issued a warning regarding toxic blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, in the Seilersee. The proliferation of the algae is attributed to warm temperatures and a lack of rainfall during the summer.
While cyanobacteria occur in small amounts in most bodies of water, high concentrations can release toxins that cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or gastrointestinal issues upon contact. The city's sewage department advises visitors to avoid direct contact with the water, specifically warning against immersing hands or feet in the lake.
Dog owners are instructed to keep their pets on leashes and ensure they do not drink from or swim in the lake. Despite the warning, pedal boat rentals remain operational during regular hours, though users are advised to avoid direct contact with the water while boating.
