Isernia secession debate resurfaces in Molise

A debate has resurfaced regarding a potential referendum to detach the province of Isernia from the Molise region and annex it to Abruzzo. This movement is driven by local dissatisfaction with inadequate public services, healthcare difficulties, and poor infrastructure.

Critics of the secession argue that such a move could be detrimental to both territories. They suggest that while Isernia currently holds significant political weight as one of only two provinces in Molise, it would become a much smaller demographic force in Abruzzo, representing less than 6% of that region's population. This loss of influence could lead to reduced resources and political representation.

Other perspectives view the proposal as an attempt to address historical regional identity and social emancipation, noting that Molise has a long history of seeking autonomy. However, opponents warn that the loss of Isernia could effectively signal the end of the Molise region as a whole.
