Isiagu Women Mobilize Against Serial Wife‑Beater in Anambra State
Women and traditional Umuada groups in the Isiagu community of Anambra State staged a public protest after a known serial wife‑beater assaulted his spouse. Citing customary law, the Umuada invoked the “alu” sanction, surrounding the offender’s compound, demanding fines, public humiliation and ostracism to deter further abuse. The demonstration highlighted the role of collective female authority in Igbo customary governance, where women can enforce moral and social standards against domestic violence.
The protest, amplified on social media by local observer Onwa Nnewi, aims to send a warning to other potential abusers in neighboring villages and to reinforce community mechanisms that protect women beyond formal legal channels.
