Isla Mujeres implements social support and security upgrades

The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has announced several initiatives focused on social welfare and public security.

The “Isleño de Corazón 2026” program was approved to support approximately 250 tourism sector workers, specifically boatmen and porters, during low-activity months. Between September and November, beneficiaries will receive 1,000 pesos via electronic card and food supplies valued at approximately 850 pesos. The program also includes training in sustainable tourism, first aid, and tourist services.

In terms of public safety, the administration delivered 500 new uniforms to the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security. The Mayor noted that the annual security budget has increased by 753 percent compared to 2021. Resources from the Fund for the Strengthening of Municipalities (Fortamun) have been directed toward eight projects involving technology, infrastructure, and professionalization. James Tobin Cunningham, State Coordinator of the Citizen Table for Security and Justice of Quintana Roo, acknowledged the improvements in surveillance and equipment that have contributed to Isla Mujeres being among the safest municipalities in the state.
