Isla Mujeres mayor teams with IMIPAS to boost sustainable fishing

Municipal President Atenea Gómez Ricalde of Isla Mujeres met with Dr. María José Espinosa Romero, head of the Mexican Institute of Research in Sustainable Fishing and Aquaculture (IMIPAS). The meeting aimed to strengthen coordination between the municipal government and the federal research institute, continue an existing collaboration agreement, and review projects focused on sustainable fishing, aquaculture and marine ecosystem conservation.

Both parties emphasized the need to use scientific knowledge to protect the island’s marine biodiversity while supporting the livelihoods of local fishing families. Initiatives discussed include responsible resource use, promotion of sustainable practices, and reinforcement of marine biodiversity protection for present and future generations.
