Isla Mujeres sascabera closures protect residents and environment

Residents of the continental zone of Isla Mujeres backed the shutdown of an illegal stone‑quarry (sascabera) after years of damage to homes and health from constant explosions, dust and vibrations. They reported cracked walls, water infiltration and debris striking rooftops, and said the closure brings a sense of peace.

The state environmental authority, Procuraduría de Protección al Ambiente, sealed several sascaberas that operated without the required environmental impact permit or operating licenses. Officials warned that unregulated extraction destroys native vegetation, harms local habitats and threatens underground aquifers. The suspension will remain while fines are imposed and owners are required to submit soil‑restoration plans.
