Isla Mujeres strengthens security through technology and police professionalization

Isla Mujeres has implemented significant security reforms, transitioning its Municipal Police into the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana as of January this year. During her government report, “Historias de la Transformación,” Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde highlighted that these changes aim to professionalize and specialize the force.

Key improvements include enhanced benefits for officers, such as life insurance, improved salaries, specialized training, and tactical equipment. The municipality has also invested in infrastructure, including the “Casa del Policía” and a new Civic Justice and Municipal Detention Center to resolve local conflicts through dialogue and human rights.

Technological advancements are central to the strategy. The municipality now operates 687 video surveillance cameras connected to two Command and Control (C2) centers located in Isla Mujeres and Costa Mujeres. This is a substantial increase from the 120 cameras available in 2021. The administration claims these measures have helped establish the municipality as the safest in Quintana Roo.
