Isla Navarino authorities evaluate trekking routes for emergency response

Authorities in the Chilean Antarctica Province are preparing for the upcoming summer season by evaluating emergency response capabilities and trekking route maintenance on Isla Navarino. During a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Disaster Risk Management (Cogrid) in Puerto Williams, officials agreed to conduct technical evaluations of several hiking paths to improve access for emergency teams.

Key areas identified for assessment include the Róbalo Valley, where officials are considering the creation of a safety trail to connect the Dientes de Navarino circuit with Laguna El Salto. Access routes to Cerro La Bandera and Valle de Los Bronces will also be reviewed. These measures follow a previous season that saw 13 rescues in the island's mountainous sectors.

Provincial Presidential Delegate Rodolfo Moncada Salazar noted that maintenance and intervention are necessary to make complex routes more expeditious for firefighters and police. These efforts will be coordinated with Conaf to protect native forests. Additional emergency preparations include conducting provincial drills, reducing fuel loads, and evaluating firebreaks in Puerto Toro.
