Islam Makhachev names Carlos Prates as most deserving title challenger

Following his successful welterweight title defense against Ian Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, Islam Makhachev has identified Carlos Prates as the most deserving contender for his next title shot.

Makhachev cited Prates’ recent activity and momentum as the primary reasons for his endorsement. Prates, who holds a 24-7 record, has secured four consecutive finishes, including victories over Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards, and Jack Della Maddalena.

The champion dismissed other potential candidates, noting that Shavkat Rakhmonov has been inactive due to injuries since December 2024. Makhachev also questioned the recent activity of undefeated contender Michael Morales. While the UFC has not officially announced the next title defense, Makhachev’s public backing of Prates significantly shifts the conversation within the welterweight division.
