Islam Makhachev targets title defense before Ramadan 2027

UFC Welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is targeting a title defense before the start of Ramadan in February 2027. Following his victory over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, Makhachev underwent three MRI scans that revealed minor spinal issues.

Makhachev stated that the issues are not serious and that he is currently focused on strengthening his spine to prepare for a return to competition. To accommodate his request to fight before Ramadan, the UFC would likely need to schedule the bout for December 2026 or January 2027.

Potential challengers include Brazilian fighter Carlos Prates, who claims the promotion promised him the next title shot following consecutive knockout victories. Makhachev has previously suggested that Prates should face Michael Morales first, but Prates maintains he has already earned his opportunity.
