Islamabad student dies after alleged Rs 9.3 million US university admission scam

Laiba Ijaz, a gold medalist from the International Islamic University Islamabad, was found dead in Islamabad following an alleged education scam. Authorities believe she died by suicide after discovering that documents provided by a consultant for admission and a scholarship to a US university, including Harvard, were fraudulent.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a criminal case against Muhammad Nauman and Fatima Sarwar. Nauman, who allegedly posed as a Supreme Court employee, has been arrested. Investigators found evidence of online fraud and blackmail on his mobile phone.

The victim's family reportedly lost approximately Rs 9.3 million to the scam. To fund her education, her father, a milk vendor, sold a plot of land and paid Rs 2.1 million in cash, while her mother's jewelry was also used to secure funds. The FIA noted that Rs 2.9 million was transferred through Laiba's bank account, with the remainder paid in cash. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to ensure immediate action and exemplary punishment for the suspects.
