Islamic Center of San Diego placed on temporary lockdown

The Islamic Center of San Diego was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon as a precautionary measure. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) deployed officers to the Eckstrom Avenue religious center to ensure the safety of those on site, stating the action was taken “out of an abundance of caution.”

The lockdown was subsequently lifted. While police provided a presence at the location, they did not immediately disclose the specific reason for the emergency security measures.

The mosque was the site of a mass shooting on May 18, when two gunmen killed three people during a hate-motivated attack. The attackers, Caleb Vazquez and Cain Clark, reportedly inscribed anti-Muslim messages on their weapons before committing suicide near the scene. A 17-year-old North Carolina resident, Sarah Lindsey Santiago, was also charged in connection with the incident for allegedly agreeing to livestream the massacre.
