Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina to elect new Reisul-ulema

The Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina is preparing to elect a new Reisul-ulema on October 10, marking the end of Husein ef. Kavazović’s 14-year leadership. Because Kavazović has completed two consecutive seven-year mandates, he is ineligible for re-election.

Three primary candidates have emerged for the position: Sarajevo Mufti Nedžad ef. Grabus, Mostar Mufti Salem ef. Dedović, and Mensur ef. Malkić, the director of the Rijasat's Department for Religious Affairs. The final list of candidates is expected to be confirmed by the Assembly of the Islamic Community on September 5.

Salem ef. Dedović’s candidacy was formally proposed by the Election Body of the Mostar Muftiate, representing several cantons and the Eastern Herzegovina region. Supporters emphasize that his candidacy reflects the needs of Muslims in Herzegovina, focusing on issues such as the status of Bosniaks and the management of waqf property. The election is viewed as a critical institutional process that will determine the religious and social direction of the Community for the next seven years.
