Islamic etiquette regarding drinking water while standing

Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith provide guidance on the etiquette of drinking water, emphasizing that sitting while drinking is the preferred Sunnah. While some narrations, such as those from Abu Hurairah, contain warnings against standing, other authentic reports indicate that Prophet Muhammad occasionally drank water while standing.

Specific instances include the drinking of Zamzam water and drinking from a hanging vessel. Scholars conclude that while sitting is recommended (mustahab), drinking while standing due to necessity, lack of space, or crowds is not forbidden (haram) and is considered 'makruh tanzihi' (disliked but not sinful). Therefore, drinking Zamzam water while standing is permissible and follows Sharia principles.
