Islamic medical associations hold conferences on ethics and healthcare

Medical associations in Nigeria and Australia recently held conferences focused on integrating Islamic values with modern medical practice to improve healthcare delivery and professional ethics.

In Nigeria, the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria held its 27th National Annual General Meeting in Ilorin. Keynote speaker Senator Dr Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority, addressed challenges such as the migration of skilled professionals and the commercialization of healthcare. He emphasized the need for compassion, competence, and conscience to restore patient trust and combat the erosion of professional excellence.

In Australia, the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) NSW State Conference took place at Western Sydney University. The event focused on advancing health across communities through clinical education and cultural safety. Topics included women’s health, cancer care, neurodiversity, end-of-life care, and clinician burnout. NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant noted the importance of collaboration across professions and communities to improve health outcomes, particularly in diverse populations.
