Colombia opens embassy in Jerusalem, drawing condemnation from 19 nations

Colombia has officially inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, a move that marks a significant shift in its foreign policy and a restoration of diplomatic ties with Israel under the government of President Abelardo de la Espriella. This development follows the severance of relations under the previous administration and includes the reinstatement of a free trade agreement and visa-free travel between the two nations.

The decision has drawn strong condemnation from approximately 18 to 19 Islamic and Arab nations, including Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Jordan, and Pakistan. In a joint statement, these foreign ministers argued that recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital violates UN Security Council Resolutions 476 and 478 (1980) and undermines international efforts toward a two-state solution. Egypt specifically summoned the Colombian chargé d'affaires in Cairo to express formal protest.

Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, welcomed the move as a victory for their diplomatic narrative. Additionally, Colombia is reportedly considering an application to join the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
