Katsina State: Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka shot dead

Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his companion, Adamu Abubakar, were shot dead by gunmen in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, on Monday, October 26, 2026. The attack occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the entrance to the cleric’s residence, where two armed assailants on a motorcycle opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Both victims were rushed to a local hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival. The Katsina State Police Command, led by Commissioner Ali Umar Fage, has launched an investigation and deployed tactical teams to track down the perpetrators. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda both condemned the killing, describing it as a heinous act.

Masussuka, 47, was known for his unconventional religious teachings and his advocacy for interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians. While his views occasionally drew criticism from conservative scholars, he was a recipient of a peace award in 2025. The militant group Ansaru reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack via an audio message, accusing the cleric of being an infidel due to his religious stances.
