Islamic teachings reward caring for thirsty animals

Two classical hadiths describe how providing water to a thirsty dog can bring divine forgiveness. In the first narration, a man quenches his own thirst at a well, then sees a dog licking the damp earth. He fills his shoe with water and offers it to the dog, earning Allah’s pardon for his sins. A second account recounts a woman who, after committing a wrongdoing, receives forgiveness after giving water to a starving dog. Scholars cite these reports from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim to illustrate the moral virtue of compassion toward animals and its spiritual benefits.
