Islamist militant violence expands across African regions

Violence perpetrated by militant Islamist organizations is expanding across Africa, threatening regional stability and the safety of civilian communities. According to an analysis by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, nearly 24,000 people died in 2025 due to violence linked to these groups, with the geographical reach of attacks increasing.

The Sahel region, Somalia, and the Lake Chad Basin remain the most severely affected areas. However, the violence is spreading toward West African countries that were previously less impacted. This expansion poses a significant threat to Christian communities, as militants increasingly target churches, religious leaders, and Christian villages, leading to the displacement of populations and the disintegration of entire communities.

Addressing the protection of these communities is becoming increasingly linked to counter-terrorism efforts, the strengthening of local communities, and the provision of humanitarian aid.
