Island Environmental Education Programs Engage Children in Brazil and Portugal

In Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, the Projeto Vitória da Restinga organized the "Guardiões da Restinga" circuit on Ilha do Boi on July 24‑25. The immersive program combined science, art and play, featuring activities such as the "Restinga Hopscotch" and "Zig‑zag of Waste," and mascots representing local wildlife to teach children about coastal biodiversity and conservation.

On Graciosa Island in the Azores, Portugal, a new Portuguese‑language children’s book by biologist Kasia Sroczynska and illustrator Bernardo C. Carvalho was released to highlight the island’s UNESCO biosphere reserve status. The story follows a young protagonist who discovers a message in a bottle and learns the responsibility of island residents as guardians of nature, reinforcing environmental awareness among local youth.
