Isle of Lismore excavations reveal significant early medieval monastery
Archaeological excavations on the Isle of Lismore have uncovered the remains of a significant early medieval monastery at Clachan. Led by Dr. Clare Ellis of Argyll Archaeology, the project involved a decade of work by island volunteers and researchers to uncover the site, known as Lios Mòr.
Findings include an oval stone building dating from the 7th to 10th centuries and a workshop containing broken moulds for rings and brooches, along with slag from non-ferrous metalwork. Approximately 120 ceramic crucible fragments were recovered, which were used to melt silver, gold, and copper alloys. These discoveries suggest the site was a wealthy, high-ranking ecclesiastical centre, comparable in importance to well-known religious sites such as Iona.
The monastery is attributed to Saint Mo Luóc (also known as Moluag), an Irish monk and missionary who played a key role in the Christianization of Scotland. The community-led project was made possible through local funding, private legacies, and crowdfunding campaigns.
