Isle of Wight Council considers savings to address £66m budget deficit

The Isle of Wight Council is navigating a significant financial crisis, facing a structural budget deficit that could approach £66 million annually by 2029/30. In response to these mounting pressures, the authority has released a wide range of potential savings and income-generating measures for discussion as part of preparations for the 2027/28 budget.

Proposed measures include controversial options such as changes to car parking charges and the Cowes Floating Bridge. Council officials have clarified that these are currently options for discussion only, and no final decisions have been made regarding service cuts or new charges.

Specifically, plans to cut more than £80,000 from library services have been put on hold. Councillors recently voted to pause these proposals to allow for further discussions with partners, following warnings that library services—which serve as vital community hubs—have already been significantly reduced. Potential library savings included transferring more responsibility to town and parish councils or reducing opening days at council-run facilities.
